FAQ

HOW DOES PRICING WORK AND HOW DO I ORDER?

  • Our pricing is typically two components: a setup charge per pattern plus a per-lineal foot lumber charge.  Please refer to our Online Ordering page for more detailed information.  We look forward to working with you.

WHAT IS THE SETUP FEE FOR?

  • There are a number of things that need to happen before your lumber is ready to mill.  Typically, we need to draw your profile in CAD, laser-cut a knife template, and grind your custom knife.  We then need to sort and pull your lumber, and rip it down to size for milling.  Then once the knives are set into cutter heads, we need to set up the cutter heads on the moulder and run a "setup board", which is a test piece of lumber to ensure we are hitting the correct profile measurements (down to 1/32 of an inch).

DO YOU HAVE MOULDINGS IN STOCK I CAN BUY?

  • Everything we make is made custom for each order.  We do not stock any moulding.

I FOUND SOMETHING THAT I LIKE IN A CATALOG. CAN YOU MAKE IT FOR ME?  OR CAN IT BE MODIFIED IN SOME WAY?

  • Absolutely. If you find a moulding profile in a catalog or online that you would like just the way it is, that’s easy.  Just send us that information with all the dimensions and the drawing itself and we can give you a quote. If you want it made differently, say you want it wider or thicker, please make notes on the drawing itself, and send that information to us with as specific directions as you can manage. For a small fee we can make a new CAD drawing as well, for client, designer, or architect approval.

WHAT LUMBER DO YOU HAVE IN STOCK?

  • We stock thousands of board feet in the most popular hardwoods (Poplar, White Oak, Mahogany, Cherry, Maple, Alder, Walnut, Red Oak, etc) as well as softwoods (Western Red Cedar, Redwood, Douglas Fir, Pine).  We can also special order whatever commercially available lumber you require for your job.  Our customers tend to prefer Poplar for interior paint-grade applications and Western Red Cedar for exterior applications.  All of our stock is "in the rough".  We do not mill it until we have an order.

WHAT IS YOUR LEAD TIME?  I NEED THIS MATERIAL FOR A JOB I AM SUPER BEHIND ON, CAN I GET THIS MATERIAL MADE REALLY FAST?

  • Our normal lead-times are a week and a half to two weeks. For an additional surcharge, we can usually fast-track your job. If you need your material faster, we can usually guarantee a one-week turnaround for an additional 20% of the job cost before tax. We can do a 3-day turnaround for 50%, and for 100% we can get it done in 24 hours. These options are not always available, but depending on the job, we can let you know if these options are possible.

I BOUGHT MOULDING FROM YOU PREVIOUSLY; CAN I GET JUST A COUPLE MORE FEET OF THAT? I ONLY NEED A LITTLE TO FINISH MY JOB SO IT SHOULD BE SUPER QUICK.

  • Unfortunately it is not that easy. Once we run your job, we break down the machine, take the knives out of the cutter-head and reset the machine for the next job. If you would like more material run, it becomes a new job. However, if the job was within a month or two, we might still have the knives which will lower your setup fee a bit. Every job (even a re-do from something you just picked up) is a new job with a setup fee and run charge, and lead time based on orders ahead of yours.

I HAVE A BASIC IDEA FOR SOME MOULDING I MIGHT NEED, BUT I DON’T KNOW THE EXACT DIMENSIONS OR AMOUNT IN FEET, CAN YOU JUST BALLPARK ME A QUOTE?

  • Sorry, no. It is impossible for us to give you a quote unless we know the pattern, dimensions, wood species, and quantity. Each of those factors influence the pricing.  If you need 1500 feet instead of 50 feet that can make a very big difference in the price. Also, if the kind of wood you need changes, the price and the availability can vary greatly. Please be as specific as possible and we will quote you accordingly. We appreciate working with customers who know exactly what they want. That’s what we’re good at.

I HAVE A ROOM I’D LIKE MOULDING FOR, CAN YOU HELP ME PICK ONE OUT THAT WILL LOOK GOOD?

  • Sorry, no. As fine as our taste is, we are not a design service. We like to stick to what we are good at - making moulding for people who know exactly what they want.

DO YOU DELIVER?

  • We do not.  Please plan to have your material picked up with a suitable vehicle, or we can refer you to a delivery service.

WILL YOU KEEP MY SAMPLE ON FILE IF I NEED YOU TO MAKE MORE MATERIAL FOR ME AT A LATER DATE?

  • Unfortunately, no.  We will use a six-inch piece of any sample you bring us to make a knife and then once your material is run, we will put it in a storage barrel where used samples accumulate for about a month or two. After that time they go to the great mill in the sky where they live on only in our memories. If you’d like your sample back, which you can hold on to forever and ever, we’d be happy to keep it with your order and you can take it with you when you pick up your order. Keep in mind that we need to cut the sample and scrape the paint off to match the pattern. We do save our CAD drawings forever so please tell us if your order is a re-order so we can match your previous order exactly.

DO YOU DO TAKE-OFFS?

  • Sorry, no.

DO YOU HAVE A WIDE-BELT SANDER? WILL YOU PRIME MY MATERIAL FOR ME?

  • No, Unfortunately we don't sand or prime anything at this time.

I NEED KD WESTERN RED CEDAR.  DO YOU HAVE THAT?

  • Yes.  KD stands for Kiln Dried.  You may also see people use the term PAD.  That stands for Partially Air Dried.  PAD just means that the lumber is in the process of drying.  It makes no promises as to how dry the lumber actually is.  We buy Kiln Dried Cedar or we air dry it ourselves for at least a year before we sell it.
